Tips for Riding Motorcycle in Rain

With monsoon showing signs of arrival in many parts of India it seems a good time to keep your motorbike ready for some memorable rides. But before you do that, there are few things you need to know for safe riding during rains on Indian roads.

There are a lot of things to take into account when riding a motorbike in rain, listed below are some must do things while gearing up for this Rainy season.

Pre-Rain Checkup
  • Check your motorbike for all kinds of repairs and replaces before the roads get wet, look for loose joints and vibrations in your bike, as your ride needs to be stable on wet roads especially on highways.

  • This is the best time to replace your motorbike tyres if you feel they are old enough.
  • Try using anti-rust for parts that are more vulnerable to weather conditions.
  • If possible get a water cover for your bike if it is often parked in open as you don't want your bike to look faded when the sun shines bright after the season.

Gearing Yourself Up
  • One of the most important things to do while riding in rains is to dress yourself well, get a full size rain coat as it will go a long way in making your ride comfortable for daily commute and will keep you dry the whole day at office.

  • Getting wet, or at least humid, when riding is distracting and very uncomfortable. It’s also when you will get a cold, or worse.
  • Always wear a helmet  especially during rains.
  • Get a proper shoe cover, simple thing but it will help keep your feet dry the whole day and will make you feel better at work.
  • Don't be late while going out in rain try to leave home before time as you are bond to face some traffic which will make you over-speed.

Riding in Rain
  • Don't ride if the rain is too heavy as it hampers visibility, instead park your bike on road side and wait for the pouring to slow down, also don't stand close to the road.

  • Slow down on intersections and signals even if the roads are empty you don't want to hit your brakes sharply as things will seem out of control.
  • Avoid riding in water log areas, watch out for manholes and pot holes as they are hard to find in water filled areas. Don't ride with assumptions take routes that you can see clearly.
  • Driving in right gear is one of the best things you can do for safe riding as it gives you a lot more control over the vehicle
  • Don't ride close to cars that have broke down, chances are there might be an oil leak which will not be visible due to wet roads
  • Give way for bigger vehicles and always stay alert on highways, look for dry patches.
  • Riding Smart and Smooth, don't do unnecessary over-speeding.
